There are a lot of ways to save money but, to be sure, if you don’t make them a habit all the tips in the world won’t help.  The best way to save money is to make it a habit, like paying your bills and going to the dentist (just more often). If you can make saving a habit you’ll find that you save a lot more than if you just leave it to chance. With that in mind make the tips below your new habits and watch your savings grow.

  • Impulse buying is killing your cash.  Before you go to the grocery store make a list of what you need and stick to it as best as possible. Also, start using coupons as much as possible.
  • Cook at home more.  If you eat out often you are you wasting a lot of money. Yes, cooking for yourself take a lot of time and energy but eating out eats up (pun intended) a lot of money very fast. Get a quick recipe cookbook if you’re not much of a cook.
  • Bring your own lunch to work on a regular basis. This will save you money and allow you to network too.
  • Buy generic brands whenever possible.  They’re normally just as good and cost at least 20% less than name brands.
  • Consolidate and pay of your credit card debt as fast as possible.  That interest is killing your savings.
  • Whatever you do, don’t pay your bills late because the overdraft fees are a savings killer. ATM fees are a good thing to avoid also, especially if your bank charges a lot.
  • Get rid of your home telephone, especially if you no longer have kids in the house and everyone has a cellphone.
  • Don’t buy books. Get a library card or buy used books.
  • Check the prices and do your research on any large items that you want to buy.  If you don’t need it right away keep your eyes open for a great price and buy it when it goes on sale.
  • These are some great tips to get you started.  Again, if you make them habitual you will save money.  When you do, put that money in your savings account and leave it there.
